Since I have recently found that new visitors have still been finding this blog, I thought that I would just check in with a Chuck Update.

He is doing just fine. The pit bulls and their owners are gone.(VERY long story that I may tell sometime when I can gather all the thoughts and circumstances and have the time to type for a while)

He is still an inside dog. He has a really bad habit of chasing cars and so that is the reason that he remains an inside dog. I would really like to let him run again since that is what he was used to before he was attacked by the Pit Bulls, but people are not used to him chasing them anymore and I am afraid that he would just dart out in front someone who wasn't on the lookout for him like they used to be.

Anyway, here are some photos of Chuck for you.

I put my shoes on him so he knows that we are about to go for a walk.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ciCTgqWoM1k/R4Et9e34G0I/AAAAAAAAANw/XFdkT_SaLuw/s400/DSCF0039.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152449982971255618" />

He almost gets up to go.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ciCTgqWoM1k/R4EuK-34G1I/AAAAAAAAAN4/iDJvAauWvuc/s400/DSCF0040.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152450214899489618" />

Nah, I think I'll skip the walk and just go back to sleep. Giant Oaks, Hickory trees, Pine trees and lots of others. Those woods are a big part of the reason that we decided to live here. Now they are all gone to make way for new houses. Hopefully there won't be too many and they will have large lots like the builder says they will. It's supposed to be big enough for whoever buys them to have horses and stuff. We'll see.

Anyway, Chuck was quite curious about what was going on and wanted to go down into the valley to check it out. We found a lot of deer tracks in the dirt so I guess they were wondering what was going on too. We got a lot of exercise that day though because after we went there, we went to the rest of the woods so Chuck could chase squirrels.

New Pit Bull having neighbor!

Now we have a new neighbor who has moved in next door and guess what he has. A Pit Bull dog. He also has a beautiful Boxer. I forgot what the Boxer's name is but he said the Pit Bull does not even have a name. It used to be his sister's dog and she doesn't want to keep it anymore for some reason or another.

Yesterday, his Pit Bull got out and of course it came straight over here. It ran from the new neighbor for a while first but when I saw that it was loose, I went out to do my usual thing and catch the neighbor's dog for him. The Pit Bull came right to me and was being very friendly.

I took him back to where he lives and the neighbor saw me in the driveway. The first thing he said was, "I think that dog hates me as much as I hate it." Well, I don't want to get on my high horse with the neighbor about how to treat animals according to me, but I can see in the future I will have to give this dude a good talking too. I am not about to have a next door neighbor hating his own dog and treating it bad just because he doesn't want to tell his sister no. If that happens it is just a recipe for me to be taking on another dog project and right now I have too many responsiblilites as it is.

I do love the dogs and cats in need but right now is not the right time to take on anymore. (Unless they are just too cute and needy!)

Chuck says it ain't gonna happen. I'm with him on that but at the same time I have lived long enough to finally learn to "Never say never."

This is a new trick

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ciCTgqWoM1k/RedN5oIyjgI/AAAAAAAAAD4/SbkGS5-McAM/s320/DSCF0014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037080360659357186" />

This little Beagle is named Sassy. She is as cute as she can be. We knew something was going on with her because she was getting fatter and fatter and her boobies started to be more obvious. What could it be? Is she going to have some weird episode or something?

Turns out, she was just getting ready for her magic trick. She was going to give birth to the world,s first litter of miniature dairy cows ever from a Beagle. Okay so they are puppies, Beagles at that. Here is Lollie.

Finally, I talked to the pit bull people.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ciCTgqWoM1k/RdvlbSwvmeI/AAAAAAAAAC4/yLY4V2Ber_U/s320/DSCF0002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5033869265572174306" />
At about 10:00 am today I told Kelley that I wanted tot go get a name tag for Chuck and let start running the neighborhood again because we had not see the pitbulls in a while, except about a week ago I did see the mama outside with her doggie drinks hanging so I knew she had more puppies.

Anyway, the other dogs haven't been seen in about a month so I was thinking maybe the people had smartened up and gotten rid of them or at least put them in a safe place.

So, at a bout 3:00pm today my dogs in th backyard started going crazy. I looked out there and there were 2 of the pit bulls. I grabbed my rifle and shot a few times in the woods to scare them because they were not standing in a safe spot for me to shoot them. The 2 split up and I went into the woods chasing after them. They got away. I knew that they were probably heading home so I decided that I would go to their home too.

Up until now, I had not actually gone to the people because I did not want to lose my cool and have the dog situation escalate into something more. Well today I through that rule out the window. When I got to their house one of the pit bulls were standing in the driveway. I whipped the car into the driveway while laying on the horn. I was pissed!

Two dudes came out of the house and the older one said, "I'm going to catch the dog now." I started into the whole spill about how they need to do soemthing about his dogs and he said for me to shoot them next time because he has wanted to get rid of them ever since he came to town about 2 months ago. Turns out, this guy is the son of the woman who owns the dogs. She is elderly and ill and loves the dogs and blah blah blah. He told me that he has been trying to figure out a way to get rid of them without breaking her heart because she says that the dogs are all she has. He said, "What about me Mama? You got me."

Needless to say, I thought I took a wrong turn at soap opera alley. Long story short. He said shoot them myself. I said I don't want to but if I get a good safe shot at them I will. So, there you have it as James Road Turns.

A few new Pic's for today

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ciCTgqWoM1k/RddKwtjmHQI/AAAAAAAAACE/WOVQdQbjWuA/s400/DSCF0006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5032573309332888834" />
If you have ever wondered if Chuck misbehaves, I caught him "red pawwed" trying to steal our dishrag. Our good friend, Hoover had to be put to sleep. He was suffering from Cushings disease. I don,t exactly know what that is but I know it kills dogs. Hoover had this for about a year and it became apparant that it was time to let him go.

He had been in good spirits and was still happy to see me and was always ready to eat. Yesterday though, he became tired of the fight and I found him laying in hole that he dug several summers ago. He always went there when it was hot because the cool dirt made him feel good. Since it is not hot, I knew that was his clue to me that he was ready to go. He could not get out of the whole, so I had to retrieve him and start with the goodbye's.

We had a vet come to the house and put him down. It was a very hard decision but I know it was the right one.

We will miss him very much but I am happy knowing that he is in Heaven with his old friend Hank, and will have a great time roaming and exploring and above all eating. That was favorite thing to do.

He got his name after the Hoover vacuum cleaner. We had a gigantic Black Cherry tree that would drop thousands of little black cherries all over the porch. Hoover would show up, before he was actually our dog, and he would eat every last cherry off the porch. He looked like a little Pac Man, or a vacuum cleaner. So we went with Hoover instead of Pac Man.

Goodbye Hoover.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://themangleddog.blogspot.com/2007/02/goodbye-hoover-you-were-good-friend.html' title='Goodbye Hoover. If I keep the camera close by they don't do anything but lay around and sleep. Just trust me, you ain't getting the best of Chuck and Bighead on this post, but I'll try to get some good pics. Even though it is way too late to stop all the bad things from happening, because they already happened, I want to pass along a GREAT resource that I found. Click Here! . I think Pit Bull dogs are gorgeous, admirable animals. I think too many people like to get them because of their reputation as bad asses. They think "If I get a bad ass Pit Bull Dog then all of my dumbass friends will think of me as a badass too." For that reason I think that there are more dumbasses with them than there are regular, sincere dog lovers. Having a Pit Bull dog doesn't make you a badass or a coolass, it simply makes you the owner of a Pit Bull dog.
As the owner of a Pit Bull dog or a Chihuaha, you have to be responsible for the things your pet does. I am sure some of you are worried about the outcome of all of this ordeal with him. I can happily report that Chuck is doing great! I am limited on time these days and that is why I haven't posted. Here are some quick points about how things have been going.
1. The pit bull dogs were spotted by us and reported to animal control about 8 times in a three or four week period. Each time they were spotted, animal control was called.
2. Each time animal control was called they sent one of their officers ( for lack of a better word) out to get a verbal or written statement from us. Each time they said if you see them you call us and we will come out. If we( animal control) see the dogs we will pick them up.
3. We called animal control because the dogs were out and they came and saw one of the dogs in the front yard. Which is a violation of the "Dangerous dog order" that I forgot to mention to you. There were 2 seperate citations issued to the pit bull owners in a 4 day period for a $100.00 fine each. Just the fact that the officer saw the dog in the front obligates him to pick up the dog. Instead, when the officer called the dog and the dog ran away from him instead of jumping happily into the waiting arms of the officer, the officer dropped the issue and never came back to get the dog.
4. The last time that we called them out they told us "We will have to bring you a paper to fill out, then you will have to go downtown to the court house and file it. Then a pick up order will be given for us to come and get them. Needless to say that just further reinforced the fact that the Davidson County animal control is an incompetent worthless piss ass waste of our tax dollars since this was the first time any of them ever mentioned anything about having to take my valuable time to run all over the damn county delivering papers to judges about things that we were told were going to be handled with a simple phone call. It's just their way to not have to do anything until everyone has been inconvenienced to the inth degree.
5. The son of the people that have the dogs has come to town and is supposed to be taking charge of the situation and even moving some of the people out of the house and is supposedly moving the dogs to a farm somewhere on the other side of the county. We have heard so much untrue crap out of those people though so we will have to wait and see what actually happens. I do have to say though that since that dude showed up the dogs have only been seen once or twice. Hopefully it will all work out.
6. Chuck is a great house dog but he is more than ready to resume his full time outside life. We are waiting for confirmation that the dogs or the people are gone.
7. We are no longer looking for donations for Chuck. Thanks to everyone who gave their money to him.
8. I will try to be a better poster in the future. More to come...

Chuck Update

I am a little behind in posting.
Another wonderful person has donated $40.00 to Chuck's vet bill. He is really making a great recovery. I am slowly introducing him to his old friend "Rufus", a big beautiful Doberman that likes to play hard and sometimes he will growl Chuck down to the ground. They love to see each other but Rufus is the boss. Since Chuck has been in the house for almost 3 weeks and Rufus is not always around, I figured I better take it slow bringing them back together so Chuck's soft wounds don't open up again.
Also, last night, the animal control officer came by and got a statement from us about what we have witnessed in regards to the pit bulls being out again. All they are going to do is fine the people $100.00. They still are not taking the dogs. Since they are not taking the dogs we are still not letting Chuck back out to run the neighborhood like he is used to doing. Those people are crappy dog people with crappy dogs and instead of them and their dogs being punished, Chuck has to be the one being punished. Other than that though he is really doing great.

Vet Bill Update

I talked to the vet yesterday and the Forsyth Humane Society has given another $100.00 towards Chuck's bill. Also, someone named Chrissy May gave $25.00. I don't know if she is a relative of Chuck's family or just a concerned person but whoever you are THANK YOU! And thanks again to Forsyth County Humane Society.
Tommorrow we get Chuck's stitches out. I am wanting to let him out of the house but the stupid pit bulls are back again. This is the third day in a row. We called the worthless Davidson County animal control, got a dispatch officer and got the old "we'll have an officer call you back." Of course they did not call back. That was yesterday. Today they were out again and again we called them and again we were told someone would call us back and again they did nothing. It looks like it truly is up to us to remove the damn things our self.
If my calculations are correct, the vet bill is down to $248.00.

They're Back!

Well yesterday the pit bulls were out again. It was Sunday. We put a call in to animal control but guess what. They do not work on the weekends. The Sheriff's department said "If they are an immediate threat to you than you can shoot them or we can send a regular officer out to you. Of course by the time the regular officer gets here the dogs are not going to be around. They don't hang out, they are always on the run except when they stop to harrass the dogs in peoples fences. Believe it or not, some people keep their dogs in fences. The term for that is "responsible dog owners."
Chuck is doing great. When I was walking him last night he started growling and barking at something in the darkness. I don't know what it was but when Chuck barks, you know that something is there. I had a spotlight and a pistol but since it ain't cool to have bullets flying wildly through the dark we ended our walk a little early. All of the dogs in the neighborhood were howling and barking too. Maybe they knew what was out there.

Chuck update

Chuck is getting better every day but he has long way to go. He is able to walk and he perks up when he sees squirrels or chipmunks. He would love to chase them but that ain't happening yet. It is great to see the big smile on his face again but it comes and goes according to how he is feeling. Later today we are going back to the vet and having his drain tubes removed. By the way, drain tubes can really make a mess! I will post more photos in the days to come.
Also, the pit bulls have still been seen running through the neighborhood and when they are out we start getting calls from the nieghbors letting us know in case I am out walking Chuck. The people have until saturday to comply with the dangerous dog order. After that, we can start calling animal control again (for all the good that does).

Progress is made

I am very pleased to report that we have gotten a very generous donation from the Davidson County Humane Society of $100.00 towards the medical for Chuck. He is a beautiful, smart, gentle dog that is beloved by anyone that has ever met him. He is owned by a very nice girl in our neighborhood who doesn't have the means to pay the high vet bill. Naturally, we want to get the vet paid for their great work. Dr. Harris did a great job putting Chuck back together and Dr. Spindel has been great in working with us. Her family has lots of dogs and they let them run loose because we live in Davidson County, North Carolina and there is no leash law. Chuck, like all of their dogs have done in the past, comes to our house and stays here 90% of the time because we treat him good and spend time playing with him and giving him attention. He even gets along with our cat, Bighead and they are good pals. My wife is very sick with Chronic Lyme Disease and on a lot of days she has a hard time even walking to the mailbox. It is a great comfort for her that Chuck is around all the time because he escorts her to the mailbox and back to the house everyday that she is able to make the walk.
There is a family in our neighborhood that has a bunch of Pit Bull dogs that run free also. Despite almost everyone on that end of the street having run-ins with the dogs that range from being chased into their cars and up trees and killing pets, the animal control authorities have been totally useless and unwilling to help solve the problem. They have been to the house a number of times and always threaten them in a number of ways but they never actually follow through with any of the threats.
A lot of people on the street have threatened to kill the dogs but no one has and I have been totally against anyone actually doing that until now. I know that Pit Bull dogs can be gentle and loving or they can be vicious, savage killers. All of this depends on how the dogs are raised and these dogs aren't being raised, they are simply being allowed to exist and in the process it is their natural instincts that are taking charge of them. Therefore, it is the lousy, sorry owners that I actually blame for all the havoc that they have reeked in our neighborhood. That being said, the dogs are out of control and must be removed one way or another. So now if someone shoots them I will not hold a grudge against them.
Anyway, Chuck had to have over 200 stitches and had countless wounds all over. The girl that owns him has a baby and is a full time student at a community college in the area. She is young and does not have the money to cover the extensive vet bills and her family has a lot of medical issues that are using up their available income. She is completely devastated and so is my wife and so am I.
Chuck made his way to our house in his mangled condition and would have surely died if we did not take him to the vet right that very second. We called our vet and told them the story of him not really being our dog but really needing our help and the vet said bring him in right now, we will be waiting for him. We could not reach anyone where Chuck lives to get permission to operate so we said please do what you can and somehow we will get you paid. A little while later we reached the girl who started calling around to find anyone in her family to say they would help pay for him. Finally she got her mom and she said she would help pay the bill.
Now, 2 days later, her mom and dad are saying they can't help.
The original vet bill was $795.00. The vet, Animal Ark in Clemmons, NC , is the kindest most caring vet that I have ever dealt with, whittled the bill down to $473.00. As great as that was, it is still out of range for her since she is a full time student and really stretches every penny.
We are caring for Chuck in our bathroom/recovery ward at our house and believe me he needs lots of care and attention until he is well enough to walk again. As I mentioned, my wife is very sick herself and we also are very tight on money. We are doing all we can in the form of care, but monetarily we are unable to pitch in except for the medicine that we bought for him.
I am asking for help from anyone who has it in their heart to help us with this situation. If anyone would like to donate to our cause you can do it directly through The Animal Ark by calling 336-778-2738 and paying with a credit card. Also, their website address is www.animalarkvet.com. Please tell them that you are making a donation for Chuck.

This is not a revenue producing venture so I will be posting on this blog every 2-3 days, everyday, if I have time, and I will keep a running total on here for all to see. When we reach our mark of $473.00. I will ask that all donations be halted. Please if you can help, help.

I put some before and after pictures up. I'm sure you can tell which is which.

I did find out that this time the Pit Bull owners have been served with a dangerous dog order. That still doesn't get them taken away but they are supposed to have the property posted and have the dogs in a secure place like an out building or a fence. We'll see how that goes and will keep you posted.

I would like to thank you ahead of time for any help you can give. If you would like some more detailed info before you feel comfortable donating please send an emai to me at b@bryand.ws

<a href="<a href=">http://www.amazingcounters.com"><img<>%20border="0"%20src="<a%20href="http: i="'1485230&c=">http://c7.amazingcounters.com/counter.php?i=1485230&c=4456003" alt="web page hit counter">
